Every serious rodeo competitor looks for pointers in cow/horse training.  In this article, Chris Littlefield develops level III in a series for training a young horse’s foundation for becoming a well-rounded cow/horse cutting competitions.  In levels I and II, the horse is preparing for professional levels of cutting, roping and barrel racing.  In level III, the horse is beginning to cut cattle on its own initiative, handling the pressure longer and moving quietly among cattle, without disturbing the herd.

When the cow stops and turns 180 degrees, and the horse learns to stop and turn 180 degrees also, staying with the cow and preventing the cow to return to the herd, then the horse and rider have accomplished level III training.

Practice and long term commitment for cow/horse competition is essential.  For more information on level III horse training, refer to the article in the Western Horseman magazine, April 2009, pages 44-50.
