Can a horse that spooks easily be trained to relax and become gentle enough to ride and work? There are simple steps taken in overcoming an extremely spooky horse. Dan Keen has provided an article with 7 steps and photos, in the Horse & Rider magazine, April 2009, pages 53-55, that present enough information to help any horse.
Keeping safety as a first consideration, Dan Keen recommends: before introducing any new object to the horse, be sure the area is free from clutter; use a 14-foot lead, gradually working closer; approach at a 45-degree angle to the horse’s shoulders; let the horse see the item . . . then walk away; let the horse smell the item . . . then walk away; let the horse feel the item . . . then walk away.
Introduce other items the same way and before long, you will develop a trusting and calm horse.
